PREVIEW OF LONGEST WALK 2 COVERAGE
Several
thousand Native Americans walkers and their supporters arrived in Washington,
D.C. during the weekend of July 11-13, 2008 to commemorate a similar historic
walk of thirty years ago. Then, over 40,000 individuals participated in a
cross-country march to protest congressional legislation that threatened tribal
rights and sovereignty.
Today, Natives are equally concerned about tribal sovereignty,
preserving sacred lands, and protecting the environment. This video, which
highlights the official presentation of the group’s 16 point Manifesto to
Chairman John Conyers of the House Judiciary Committee, will provide a brief
highlight of NATV’s news coverage of the Longest Walk 2 during the long weekend.
Conyers has promised to hold hearings on the document, and NATV will be there
with on-site news coverage.
Legendary
singer Harry Belafonte was on hand to show support for the weekend event, as
were film stars Daryl Hannah, Danny Glover and Civil Rights activist Dick
Gregory.
Stay
tuned for NATV’s exclusive interviews with several of these stars, Native
participants, Walk organizers, and other news coverage of the Longest Walk 2.
